CALENDAR

If you’ve got @newforestoffroadclub near you I can’t recommend joining them for a group ride highly enough. If you’re curious about gravel, been put off by chads or worried you’re too slow (hot tip - you aren’t) then they’re the people to go play with.

This is what group rides are about. Happy people, chatting, relaxed on bikes and comfortable in the company they find themselves in.

CLASS 3.

Brakes are important (some might say life saving!) and there’s so many tips to get good brake performance. Like getting the calipers even and cable tension optimal. Straightening rotors and keeping on top of wear and then being able to do something about it

This class will help you understand how to adjust the brake pads on your bike whilst out on the trail and how to replace them should you need to as well as pad replacement (including disc and rim brakes).

A little about Laura...

Laura is a level 3 Cytech master technician and Shimano Doctor which means she has completed all new and existing training from the manufacturer. Laura's love for bike mechanics started when she was 13, buying, renovating and selling bikes on Ebay and Gumtree. Since then, Laura has gained 8 years of experience fixing bikes in a commerical setting. Her work experience includes Halfords, Boost Bike Hub in Brockenhurst and Cycle Works. Laura's teaching style is calm, practical and methodical. You learn both patience and skills in her presence.

Want to sign up but keen to know if there will be a familiar face there?

New Forest Off Road Ride Leader, Nic Carass and Grace Compton will be facilitating the evening. The evening will have an intimate vibe with the group size being capped at 6 people.

Every ticket holder will have the opportunity to join a whatsapp group to connect with others and share mechanic wins during and after the class.

Still on the fence as to whether you should invest in yourself and learn bike mechanics? We asked our ride leaders how it feels being able to do trail side bike mechanics, this is what they said.

Martine 👉 I'm confident to get out on my own, knowing I can overcome basic issues without calling in the cavalry.

Kate 👉 Knowing how to fix my bike if something goes wrong makes me feel confident, empowered and self sufficient.

Nic 👉 I've been able to say yes to some big adventures on the bike, all becuase I'm confident in the basics of bike mechanics. I once calmly repaired a puncture at the top of a mountain on the Torino Nice rally and I remember it as one of my finest moments of the ride!

We can't wait to see you in the workshop ✌️

Knowing how to fix our bikes allows us to travel further and for longer, it gives us our independence. That's why we are partnering with Laura (she her), from Bournemouth Cycle works, to offer a 4 week bike mechanic course that will give you the confidence to go on 2 wheeled adventures.

Come learn bike mechanics in the bosom of the matriarchy.

CLASS 1.

In this class, you will learn how to ensure your bike is trail safe, how to check for component wear and how to potentially prevent it.

Come to this class if you are at the start of your journey of how to maintain your bike. Establish where that creaking sound is coming from, whether the tread on your tyres is worn, if your wheels are true, if there is any play in your cranks and if your chain is stretched. Learning an M check, committing it to memory and doing it before every ride is an excellent life skill that will pay dividends in the long run.

The class will start with learning an M-check. Then we'll get hands on, torquing loose bolts and getting a feel for how tight they should be.

We'll be listening for noises to find where something might be loose. As well as checking headsets and cassettes and actually tightening or adjusting them too.

We'll learn good workshop practices too, like don’t put your figures in spinning rotors or move bikes around when others are working on them.

We'll learn when and what lubricants to use, grease or anti-seize and which chain lube is best for your riding.

Laura will have some completely worn out components for us to look at so we can better understand when to replace them.

We would like to welcome you to the P.A.S.T adventure series. On Friday the 1st of December, 3 people in our community will share their experiences of being on two wheels.

  • In 2018, Sue won the very first ‘Adventure Queen’ Grant which involved money, outdoor gear and mentoring to go off on a life changing adventure.

Her winning proposal was to cycle and hike 1500 miles along the ‘Via Alpina’ through 8 countries for several months. It was going to be part of her ‘gap year’, aged 55. She was going to go solo. But then her daughter, Katy, joined her.

In this talk, Sue gives a glimpse of what it’s like to bike-pack through Slovenia and Italy. However, beneath that story are stories of being a care-giver for her parents, of the changing dynamics in mother-daughter relationships, and the beauty of spending quality time together outside being active with people you love.

  • Bassonist Al, and Founder of Play Outdoors Productions, will be sharing the story of living on two wheels and the realities of a nomadic set up that are too often glamourised by the bikepacking community.

  • Leah will be sharing the story of how, when and why she fell DEEP in love with BMX racing and how you can too!

The P.A.S.T adventure series spotlights the amateur. The person who already won by getting to the starting line. The person who got out of the rut and went on an adventure. The person who had 9 hours without the kids so went to the forest for a camp out before being back for the school run in the morning.

These are the stories that aren't told in the media. We're not doing anything the best, or for the first time. We're not the fastest and we're not being sponsored. There's no medal at the end. We're powered by blissful ignorance and naive optimism and we're just f*****g doing it.

This series is designed to encourage people to get out there, in whatever way they want to.

We can't wait to see you there ✌️

We would like to welcome you to the P.A.S.T adventure series. On Friday the 3rd of November, 3 women in our community will share their experiences of being on two wheels.

  • 17 year old Cece Balfour will be telling the story of her Norfolk adventure riding the Rebellion Way, a cycling UK route inspired by Boudicas' legacy, with a group of powerful women. The stats from Ce Ce's adventure include 3 bikes, 3 mums, 3 types of trailer, 1 baby, 1 toddler, 1 teenager, these are the kind of ride stats NFORC can get on board with. "Sharing skills, children, love and laughter. This is the matriarchy at it's finest" We can't wait to hear Ce Ce's story.

  • Our second story teller Martine, set out in the May half term to ride the Devon coast to coast with a sprightly crew of 3 adults and 2 kids (6 & 8). We'll hear all about the laughs, tears, scraped knees and memories made whilst out on the trail and how parents can set about tackling a bikepacking adventure with kids in tow.

  • Our final story teller is Komoot Editor, Alice Baddeley. In August, Alice set out to ride in a 340 degree northerly direction for 800 miles from her home in Shoreham beach to Oldshoremore beach in the highlands. Travelling solo, camping most nights and riding off road, we'll hear all about the route and what prompted her to set out on this straight line adventure!

ONLINE WORKSHOP

Get a ticket here

We want to do what we can to support the growth and development of women, trans, femme and non binary led groups around the world. In this workshop you'll learn how we do what we do and why.

This online workshop is designed to

1) Share how we are building community & connection, here in the New Forest.

2) Guide you through how to start your own, mission-led vibe.

Until there are women, queer, trans, femme and non binary led communities in every region around the world, there is work to be done. That’s where you come in.

The agenda

👉How to build the mission, values and principles for your community

Building a mission, values and principles has given The New Forest Off Road Club a compass that ensures we stay true to what we stand for.

We didn’t have this stuff worked out before we started. We examined the behaviours and morals of the people showing up to rides and decided to ground our values in their traits. This session will help you do the same.

Having a clear mission has allowed us to communicate clearly with brands and negotiate agreeable partnerships. This session will help you establish what you stand for as a community and how to run towards your vision.

👉Group ride top tips

We’ve learnt stuff along the way. Minimum 3 ride leaders, keep a database, document heavily (We’re out here). We’ll be chatting through what we’ve learnt over the last 2 years and sharing our top tips to make sure everyone is having a good time on your rides.

👉How to foster a culture of 'accidental activism'

Some people just wanna ride their bikes, and that’s cool. But we feel a sense of urgency to do something different, to design something that offers an alternative to the norm. Accidental activism is where we use the strength of community to create a safe space for people to learn and think critically. Meeting everyone with patience and tolerance, we are able to offer an alternative to ‘cancel culture’ and ensure people get to experience a space that might not be their day to day norm.

👉How to build a network of facilitators, (it takes a village)

For this part of the session, we will share how we established a group of ride leaders that have hosted over 77 rides with 300 individuals since October 2020. We favour a holistic, permaculture approach to organising ourselves over traditional structures like committees and boards. We will share how we make this work, still get shit done and keep it fun.

👉Q &A

A space where all questions can be asked. We will lean on the expertise of the group to help answer questions. No silly questions, let’s all learn from each other.

Our first story teller is New Forest Off Road Club ride leader Sue.
Sue will be sharing vintage tales from her 3 week bike tour around Iceland in 1996. Inspired by reading Josie Dew’sThe Wind in My Wheels”, Sue and her partner set off on their Dawes Galaxy road bikes to explore the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’ along the 800 mile Route 1 Ring Road.

Our second story teller is
Ve. Ve is a scientist by day, adventure cyclist by night! Ve rides with iconic London Crit Club, The North London Thundercats, Women of Colour Cycling Club and the trailblazing Steezy Collective. Ve is going to tell us the story of her first ever bikepacking adventure, the Congo Nile Trail!

Our third and final story tellers are the Co Founders of Wizard Works, Harry & Ve.

On May 7th, 2015, Harry & Ve flew from Melbourne, where they had been living for three and a half years, to Tokyo to begin a two wheeled adventure. The plan involved cycling through Japan, South Korea and China before heading into south east Asia.

Harry and Ve will tell the story of their colour filled adventure and how Wizard Works was born.
